Business Biorhythms
Maybe it was the 6am operating room demonstrations I was forced to attend in the early days of my medical device sales career. No amount of coffee could remedy the situation. It was clear I hated mornings…
Perhaps it’s genetic or that fact that I came from an unconventional upbringing, but I am not a morning person, professional, or thinker. Even in grade school I recall being less than “effective” in the cold dark hours of the day. As I moved on through our illustrious public school system, I dreaded the first few classes and can’t recall much about geometry or biology. Seems they were always taught by those dreary souls that were able to function regardless as to the location of the sun or lack of interest displayed by their pupils…
Thank God creative writing and the social sciences always appeared to be conducted later in the day. These teachers may have had an insight above and beyond how the human mind functions, perceives, and achieves. They must have understood their own “Biorhythms” as well, and decided to sign up for home-room or study hall until they “woke up”…
As I graduated to the real world of business, marketing and sales, where it’s all about “doing the numbers” and corporate culture, nothing really changed. I hated mornings, and did my best work after most people called it a day.
When the sun sets and the time clocks are punched, most Americans are either done or on with their fun. Yet like many entrepreneurs, creators, writers, and dream seekers, I love the night….
If I had one piece of advice for a young person today, it would be to “discover” not only what it is you’ve been blessed with and love to do, but when you’re most effective at being the best YOU!
