Liberalism on the “Spin” cycle
There is a family owned and operated business in a small town near me in Upstate NY. It’s a free-standing laundromat, and the epitome of the American dream. I discovered this convenient, clean, supervised and modern facility several years ago when I was on “hiatus” from my marketing career, chasing golf balls at the Sagamore resort. All the front loading stainless steel washing machines were brand new, as were the wall of dryers. A married couple had invested their life savings in the venture, and the husband was always there it seemed. You could almost eat off the floor as he proudly maintained his baby, which included a neat nautical theme that complimented the name of their business, “Atlantis“…
Flash forward to 2012, as I revisited my old “washing ground”, sustained by several large apartment complexes in a very blue-collar area. Something had changed dramatically and it wasn’t just the cost of detergent. The always smiling and busy husband had moved on, leaving the business to his wife. She now had her sister, Mother, or son on post at the counter. Several of the dryers were “out of service”, and the once gleaming floors needed to be cleaned as bad as my clothes…
I discovered that they were having problems with the septic system and that the town was putting pressure on them. This seemed hard to believe as the property taxes are insane in that county yet the infrastructure doesn’t reflect such. Yet another example of our tax dollars at work in the great “Vampire State”…
As the remaining family members fought to keep what was left of their business, during the era of “ObamaCare“, still another liberal policy soaked them again. With the Federal government failing to enforce immigration laws already on the books, filing suits against states like Arizona that do, no one is immune to the lunacy of liberalism…
As I decided to spend a rainy Summer Saturday doing some heavy-duty laundry, I was greeted by a sight I haven’t seen since my days down South. A big white van was in the parking lot as I pulled in, and dozens of “migrant workers” were “occupying” the entire facility. Not to “racially profile”, but the heritage of these “customers” appeared to be other than Mexican. Certainly from South of the border, but definitely not born, raised, or even capable of understanding “America”, let alone the language…
One washing machine was available as the owners sister and their Mother appeared stunned by the “invasion”. They indicated that this had been occurring for several weeks now and they were “advised” to accommodate this “migration” by “The State”. Not a one of these “workers” could speak English, and their “supervisor” dropped them off and disappeared for several hours. As the normally calm and serene laundromat spun out of control, I felt horrible for the frustrated and frazzled attendants, watching in dismay. They tried to communicate with the “migrants” as they left machines full with wet clothes while they congregated outside, enjoying their time away from the fields…
Finally, the American “supervisor” appeared and hurried his “crew” to finish their task. With garbage bags slung over their shoulders stuffed with freshly washed work clothes, they loaded up in the van. Still rattled by the chaos, I approached the poor women at the counter, and they informed me that they had requested a schedule as to when they would be “visited” by the large crew to no avail. They were although threatened by action from the “A.C.L.U.”, if they prevented the migrants from using the facility in any way.
So as our President proclaims, “You didn’t build it“, if you own a small business today, what he really means is that liberalism has paved the way. With taxes, tolls, and regulations, he really is trying to create an “Obama-nation”….
